Dedekind, Friedrich/S. Bonaventura/G. Stengel
Satrirical poem/good manners/astronomy Kepler Galileo 1631 | Ludus Satyricus de Morum Simplicitate seu Rusticitate. Vulgo dictus Grobianus. Libri Tres, Leiden, Joannis Maire, 1631, 215+(1) pp.
An attractive seventeenth-century edition of Friedrich Dedekind’s celebrated satirical poem Grobianus, one of the best-known works of German Renaissance literature on manners and social behaviour. First published in the sixteenth century, the poem humorously turns the conventions of courtesy literature upside down, describing the habits of an imaginary society in which vulgarity, gluttony, drunkenness and bad table manners are elevated to virtues.
Rather than offering conventional advice on proper conduct, Dedekind exposes unacceptable behaviour through exaggerated examples of how not to behave. The work is particularly interesting for the history of etiquette, dining customs, food culture and everyday life in early modern Europe.
