Willem Breebaart (1722-1794) [publisher]
[Antique print, woodcut] HOORN, VEEMARKT, HOUTSNEDE “De Hoornse Beestemarkt”, (re-) published ca. 1776.
[EN] Inscription in pen above a 17th-century woodcut with a view of the cattle market in Hoorn. In the background seven houses, the most left house with the coat of arms of the city of Hoorn on the facade. On the right a canal with a ship in which a cow is brought. In the middle the market field with a few dozen cows and people. The woodblock is unsigned but beautifully carved. The block was used in the 18th century by the Hoorn city printer Willem Breebaart (1722-1794), but is clearly much older. Three copies of the 18th-century editions, above an announcement for a “magere beeste-marckt tot Hoorn” [“beasts market in Hoorn”] are known, one of which is in the Atlas van Stolk (no. 4101; described by Muller under no. 4118) and one in the West Frisian Municipalities Archive Service (supply printed documents 9050, no. 49). All three copies show that there are cracks in the matrix and the edges are damaged. In our print, the woodblock is still completely intact and of very good quality. ca. 1776.
Handwritten title in pen and ink: ‘de Hoornse Beestmarkt.’
