Post, Elisabeth Maria

Het waare genot des levens. In brieven. Amsterdam, Johannes Allart, 1796.

Considerations by Elisabeth Post (by then Mrs. Overdorp) in the form of letters, written by and addressed to fictitious people. After the publication of her earlier novels such as ‘Het land’ and ‘Voor Eenzaamen’, Post moved to Velp where she met Justus Lodewijk Overdorp, who was a preacher in Noordwijk-Binnen. Marrying him meant that she would have to take residence in Noordwijk, where she spent the most miserable years of her life. Although she described her marriage to Overdorp as idyllic, the surrounding nature could not inspire her to write. Despite performing her duties as a preacher’s wife normally, she was plagued by asthma and depression. It was Overdorp who eventually persuaded her to pick up the pen, after which she wrote this bundle. As a preacher’s wife, she was no longer able to advocate for the independency of women, as she had previously done. She mainly describes the woman as a wife, mother and educator. Various subjects are dealt with, such as education, religion and zealotry, virtue, theatre, giving the bundle the liking of a spectatorial publication. A surprising addition is the final letter of the bundle, named ‘Over de Zijpenberg’, in which Post steers away from describing the artificial nature as she had done in Velp, but rather prefers the more wild nature.
As everything published by her, this bundle of letters appeared with Amsterdam publisher Johannes Allart, who was one of the first important Dutch publishers – if not the most important – in the period surrounding 1800. L2933
