A first-edition collection of plates that celebrates “‘t eenzaam buiten leven ” (“the solitary outdoor life,” engr. 1), and which marks the earliest topographic print series of the Northern Netherlands. An arcadic poem by the Dutch poet and playwright Gijsbert Tijsens (Tysens) (1693-1732) accompanies 12 engraved plates by Claes Jansz Visscher, originally published separately in 1611 as “plaisante plaetsen.” Visscher’s engravings illustrate the outdoor lives of peasants and animals in the towns and countryside of Haarlem and Zaandvoort. Plate 1 presents various mottoes in Latin and Dutch printed below Haarlem’s coat of arms, which is flanked by the allegorical figures “Diligence” and “Father Time,” all set against a pastoral background. Plate 2 includes a numbered index of the plates that follow. Plate 12 pictures the ruins of the 13th-century Huis ter Kleef near Haarlem.
