French literature by the French jesuit scholar Dominique Bouhours (1628-1702). Nouvelle édition augmentée, enlarged edition.

Bouhours was well known for his work in grammar, rhetoric and literary criticism. The book contains a collection of clever and profound reflections, for instance of the Querelle des Anciens et des Modernes debate.

Full leather binding with a missing shield with the text on the spine and damages on the hinges and top and bottom of the spine. Interior in good conditionmissing the front. Titlepage with text in Latin and Greek. Interior in good condition. With:vita Aristophanis, Plutus, Nubes, Notes and Indexes. Robert Clavel was an English printer active in London during the late 17th century, known for publishing classical texts and scholarly works.

Provenance: Stamp of Netherby Library on the titlepage, middle bottom. This private library belonged to the Graham family, established on the estate Netherby in Cumberland (Cumbria), England. Famous for the many manuscripts and rare books. Handwritten former owner inscription on the paste-down: M. Fichant (?) Ptre (?) 1733.
