Woensel, Susanna Maria van (1782-??) after unknown maker
Etching/ets: 21 profile portraits [3 plates] (21 profielen van hoofden).
Print with 21 very small profile portraits of a man and a woman growing old, from childhood to old age. This lot contains three impressions, the visual source of the set, and two copies by Susanna Maria van Woensel. Possibly the first impression is a French etching. Being the number of profiles uneven, the number of male portraits results to be one higher than the female portraits. The quality of the impressions varies significantly according to the period in which the copies were made. The visual source is very refined, the profiles are etched quite in detail. This impression, though, is not signed. The first impression by van Woensel is much less detailed and suffered some technical problems (namely ink spattering), but is dated below: “Susanna Maria van Woensel den 17 Augustus 1801 in Den Haag”; the third and final plate is always by van Woensel, though it looks much refined and detailed. Monogrammed on the bottom right: “S.M.V.W.”. Susanna Maria was the older sister of Petronella, and they might have enjoyed amateur etching and drawing.
