He was taught by Vossius and Barlaeus and was made secretary of Hugo de Groot in In 1642. Van Beuningen was appointed town clerk of Amsterdam the following year. Coenraad van Beuningen was incredibly passionate about literature, philosophy, theology, history and the natural sciences. He showed interest in the ideas of Descartes and was on friendly terms with Jan Six and Anna Maria van Schurman. From 1683 on, his took a downward turn: Van Beuningen lost his wealth and his mental state increasingly worsened. Plagued by demons, he was declared insane and spent his days isolated in his house along the Amstel river (known in Amsterdam as the House with the Blood Stains)
