Convolute, 1774, Theatre | Convolute of 5 tragedies by Lucretia Wilhelmina and Nicolaas van Winter. Amsterdam, Pieter Meijer, 1774, 5 titles in 1 volume.
Convolute containing 5 plays by Lucretia Wilhelmina van Merken and her husband Nicolaas van Winter. After their marriage, the two published their stage works together in two volumes titled Tooneelpoëzij (1774, 1786), although by far most of the texts come from Lucretia’s hand. Van Merken was praised by her contemporaries and even dubbed “the Sappho of our century”.
Nicolaas van Winter rose to prominence with his romantic tragedy “Monzongo de koningklyke slaaf”, which has become one of the most popular anti-slavery productions in the history of Dutch theatre. In his preface to the play, Van Winter condemns the slavery system and is one of the first calling for its (gradual) abolition.
