after or by Melchior Lorck (1526/27-after 1583) [?]
[Antique titlepage, 1604] Ivlii Clarii Patritii Alexandrini… opera omnia…, published 1604, 1 p.
Title page to an edition of the collective works of Giulio Claro (or Clarus) (1525-1575), with printer’s device with a Fortuna and the motto: ‘FRONTE CAPILLATA EST POST HAEC OCCASIO CALVA.’ belonging to Nicolaus Bassé, later inherited by Wolfgang Richter. The publication was realized in Frankfurt, 1604.
On verso, the portrait of Heinrich of Rantzau (1526-1598); half-length, turned slightly to right; wearing armour, the helmet at left on the balustrade; to left and right five coats-of arms each on the architectural border. The wooden plate was modified as the date at the bottom left was changed from 1584 to 1595, and his age on the right was updated from 50 to 70, although his features have been left untouched. Possibly by Melchior Lorck (1526/27-after 1583).
Rantzau was a German humanist writer and statesman, a prolific astrologer and an associate of Tycho Brahe. He was son of Johan Rantzau. He was Governor of the Danish royal share in the Duchy of Holstein, a rich man and celebrated book collector. Rantzau is perhaps best remembered as a patron of scholars. His own Tractatus astrologicus de genethliacorum thematum appeared in 1597, and went through five editions by 1615. In his own time, he was regarded as a generous supporter of artists and writers in Lübeck, many of whom he engaged to write memorials of his father. Rantzau was also a successful merchant with trading interests in the east-west trade through Husum and Lübeck.
