On the pedestal in the middle is the personification of Cartography, with a globe in her hand that she measures with a compass. A sheet of paper [originally a map of Friesland] rests on her thigh. At her feet, a measuring chain, a measuring wheel and a portrait of Willem IV van Oranje-Nassau. Below is a blank pedestal. Cartography keeps a watchful eye on Whimsy (Wispeltuer), on the bottom left corner. He stands for the fickleness that the Frisian country has to adapt to: a forest could suddenly be under water, because his body melts due to the salty water of the sea. Above left of his head a shield with the coat of arms of Friesland (with slanting beams and pompeblêden). The threat of the sea is depicted in the lower right corner by a dashing Neptune (Sea Guardian). Left and right of Cartography more figures related to Friesland and its fertile nature, fishing and agriculture. On the left, with her arm resting on a jug from which water flows, a stream goddess (Stroomwachtess) with the personification of fishing (Visschevang) on the right of her. Above them from left to right: a satyr with a flute as the personification of nature (Natuer), the personification of the woods with oak leaves (Woudman) and the personification of peat extraction (Woman Veenbrand). Bottom right her wife Onland, who is mourning the damage caused to the land by peat extraction.

To the right of Cartography sits Flora and/or Ceres (Woman Field Crop) with a cornucopia, she stands for the abundance that flows from the land. Above her, in the background, two female personifications associated with green meadows and/or lawns: Beemdeheil and Graazevol. To the right, holding in one hand a trumpet with a freedom hat and in the other hand a shield with a blank coat of arms is the Frisian Virgin. In the background is a landscape with characteristic Frisian elements, such as the Sjaerdemaslot in Franeker and the fire-breathing Rode Klif in Gaasterland (which would have been a volcano in ancient times).

Despite all the Frisian details, this plate was possibly to be employed as frontispiece elsewhere. Therefore, all the possible modifications were placed on the sheet on the legs of Carthography, on the pedestal at center and on the shield to the right. In order to allow these modifications the plate was covered in the pertinent regions (possibly with leather pieces or other materials).

As PR121028 also shows, the plate was reused several times with these different purposes. Also the Rijksmuseum holds several impressions with these modifications, see inv. RP-P-AO-22-0.

Originally, the frontispiece opened Bernardus Schotanus à Sterringa’s Uitbeelding der Heerlijkheit Friesland. Zoo int algemeen, als in haare XXX bijzondere grietenijen (…). Leeuwarden, firstly published by François Halma in 1718.

[NL] Deze prent was oorspronkelijk bedoeld als titelpagina voor: Schotanus à Sterringa, Bernardus. Uitbeelding der Heerlijkheit Friesland. Zoo int algemeen, als in haare XXX bijzondere grietenijen (…). Leeuwarden: François Halma, 1718. Dit exemplaar is echter speciaal gemaakt als titelprent voor portefeuille 22 (Amsterdam, deel 3: Stadhuis op de Dam, beelden e.a.) van de Atlas Ottens. Dit is geen gebonden atlas, maar een atlas in de betekenis van een verzameling cartografische en topografische prenten en tekeningen. Deze collectie dankt haar naam aan de bekende Amsterdamse (kaart)uitgevers- en drukkersfamilie Ottens. Reinier Ottens II verkocht de collectie – zijn persoonlijke verzameling, deels geërfd van zijn oom Reinier I – in 1772-1773 aan het militair kabinet van stadhouder Willem V. De Atlas Ottens heeft 28 topografische portefeuilles – negentien van de Nederlanden en negen van Amsterdam – en één portefeuille met hemelkaarten. In ieder geval hadden alle topografische portefeuilles oorspronkelijk een titelprent als deze. Het merendeel is bewaard gebleven en in de collectie van het Rijksmuseum te vinden. Voor een exemplaar van de oorspronkelijke prent zie RP-P-AO-2-23. Waarschijnlijk was de koperplaat van deze prent in het bezit van de familie Ottens, evenals de platen van de kaarten uit ‘Uitbeelding der Heerlijkheit Friesland’, die voorkomen in het zevende deel van de door hen uitgegeven Atlas Maior (1725-1750). Voor de titelprenten van de Atlas Ottens zijn bij het afdrukken van de koperplaat telkens drie delen afgedekt: de kaart op het bovenbeen van Cartografie, de titel op het voetstuk en het wapenschild bij de Friese Maagd rechts. Deze delen konden vervolgens met de hand worden ingevuld voor elke portefeuille. Het is niet duidelijk wanneer ze precies zijn gedrukt, maar het moet tussen 1720 (toen overleed Halma, waarna de plaat waarschijnlijk in het bezit van Ottens is gekomen) en 1772, toen de verzameling werd verkocht, zijn geweest.
