Two theater sets representing Dutch home interiors. Plays performed at Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam, Leidseplein, which had opened in 1774.

Titled below: DE OUDERWETSCHE BURGERKAMER (1787) / DE HEDENDAAGSCHE BURGERKAMER (1794).

Unsigned states.

The first interior appeared in the play “De stiefmoer. Kluchtspel” by Thomas Asselyn, preformed in Amsterdam from 1684.

The second interior appeared in the play “De gewaande onnozele juffer, of De belagchelyke poëet. Blyspel” by Philippe Néricault Destouches, performed in Amsterdam from 1783.

The engravings were originally published as part of a larger collection showing the stages in use in Amsterdam, a sequel to the series showing the architecture of the new theatre. The series of 14 plates, were published by Jan Willem Smit. Some prints have a border and also show the audience and the interior of the theatre itself. This is a version without the public, only showing the decor.

[NL] In de “ouderwetse burgerkamer” aan de muur: familieportretten, porcelein servies, wapens, vogelkooi, in de kamer diverse figuren waaronder smekende vrouwen en kinderen op de knieen. In de “hedendaagse burgerkamer” guirlandes aan de muur en een vrouw die een man met degen bedreigt, drie vrouwen en een man in prachtige kledij met veren hoeden.
