Sheet with a large representation of the application of the new fire hoses by Jan van der Heyden and Jan van der Heyden II to extinguish a fire hitting a building in an imaginary city. At the top two cartouches with the titles in Dutch and French. At the bottom four small representations of fires in houses and on a ship and a model of the pump. In between, the legend A-M in Dutch and French. A text is printed on the sheet below the plate with a description in 4 columns in Dutch and French. The sheet belongs to the supplements to the fire hose book by Jan van der Heyden (1690).

Jan van der Heyden was a painter, glass-painter and draughtsman active in Amsterdam, specializing in town views. He was born in Gorkum but in 1646 the family moved to Amsterdam where he witnessed the fire of the old Town Hall in 1652. He was trained as a mirror manufacturer and glass-painter. He traveled to Cologne and the Rhine region, and in 1661 he married Sara ter Hiel from Utrecht in Amsterdam. Van der Heyden had a prolific second career as inventor, manufacturing a new streetlamp in 1668, and as fire-expert, designing an improving a fire pump and hose since 1671. With his brother Nicolaas he was appointed as supervisor of the city fire pumps in 1673. He was at the head of the Amsterdam fire-fighting in Amsterdam until 1692 when he passed on this position to his son Jan.
