The best-known of Annibale Carracci’s engravings was made after several years of inactivity as an engraver, at a time when the artist was already in Rome in the service of the Farnese family to carry out the decoration of the palace’s camerino. It is likely that, in anticipation of the decoration of the Galleria Farnese, Annibale was sent to Caprarola to study the room of the Fasti Farnesiani frescoed by Taddeo Zuccari (1529-1566) this could according to De Grazia explain the presence on the second state of the engraving of the indication “Caprarola.” The theme of the Pieta was very dear to Annibale, who tackled it in various periods of his career with ever new impetus and inventiveness in paintings (London National Gallery, Vienna Kunsthistroisches Museum) drawings and engravings, always paying particular attention to the rendering of expressions and feelings.

The plate presents in the background a gloomy sky whose ominous effect is intensified by the use of multiple vertical marks, probably caused by the deterioration of the etching varnish, a defect that Annibale nevertheless knew how to exploit to achieve an effect of greater drama. Also contributing to this effect is the dry point, a thinner tool for more delicate marks, which the artist used only on this occasion.

This plate is a copy after the fifth state of the engraving.
