James McArdell (1729-1765), after Adriaen Brouwer (1605/06-1638)

[Antique print, mezzotint] The blacksmith (de smid), published ca. 1750.

Interior of a blacksmith’s forge, where one man, seen from behind, pulls a chain with left hand above him, bending his head down and holding a piece of metal in the embers with tongs in the other while blowing on it. Another man, to right, hammers at a piece of metal on an anvil, the light from the fire falling on his head and upper body. Beautiful dark scene with the light source at the center of the composition.

Lettered below: ‘Done from a Capital Picture of Brouwer in the Collection of B: Cleeve Esqr. by Jas. Mc.ARdell. / Sold by J. Mc.Ardell at the Golden Head in Covent Garden. Price 2s.’

Mezzotint on paper with small margin; total: 371 x 269 mm; some scratches on the surface, a repaired tear on the top right corner, some smudges and traces of previous mounting on verso. Otherwise in very good condition.
