Portrait of Constantijn Huygens (1596-1687), bust to right in an oval, wearing a flat-cap and black coat and white collar; coat of arms below; second state with lettering.
Secretary (and artistic advisor) to the stadholder Frederik Hendrik at The Hague from 1625, and of his successor William II. He followed his father in this role, and was succeeded in it by his son of the same name. His mother was the sister of the artist Jacob Hoefnagel. A diplomat (knighted by James I) poet, composer and patron of the arts, and one of the earliest recognisers of the talent of Rembrandt.
