Stefano della Bella (1610-1664)
Antique print, etching, Rome, Della Bella | View on the Colosseum and the Arch of Constantine (Gezicht op het Colosseum en de Boog van Constantijn), published ca. 1655, 1 p.
Landscape overlooking the Colosseum on the right and the Arch of Constantine on the left. Between the monuments are men and horses. In the foreground a rock with the inscription S.P.Q.R.. From a series of 13 round prints, all depicting views of Rome and the surrounding area, based on drawings made on the spot, many of which were in two sketchbooks (now dismantled) at the Uffizi.
From the set Paesaggi e Rovine di Roma [Paysages et ruines de Rome].
Signed at bottom: [St]ef Della Bella jnuent. fecit; with the address of the publisher: P. Mariette exc. cum Priuil. Regis Christ. Pierre Mariette married in April 1655 with Madeleine de Collemont, the widow of François Langlois, who in 1646 published the set in Paris; from then on he continued his workshop at the ‘Colonnes d’Hercules’ in Paris. Most likely he reissued the plates he inherited from Langlois (Ciartres) soon after he settled in his workshop.
Numbered on the top right corner: 9.
