Plate 6: Landscape with a castle overlooking a valley at right; various travellers walking along a path leading past a cross at centre; added to a series of five landscapes by Van de Velde after Gerrit van der Horst and published by Visscher in 1628.
The original plate was wider and presented the scene of the fall of Icarus higher in the sky. In the middle of the sky, at the top, is still visible a feather detached from the wings of the unfortunate young man. The plate was cut also on the right. A copy of the larger plate is at the Rijksmuseum: RP-P-1898-A20725.
Signed on the bottom, with the address of the publisher, without the number on the bottom right corner. At bottom: ‘G. Horst / CIVisscher fecit/ et excude:.
On verso, collector’s mark of Pim van Eekelen (1923-1984) [L. 5101].
[NL] Berglandschap met wandelaars en herders. Links op een heuvel een ommuurde stad met een kasteel. Door het dal stroomt een rivier waar twee vissers hun hengel in hebben geworpen. Antieke landschapsprent gemaakt door Claes Jansz. Visscher.
