Full-length portrait of Kenau Hasselaer standing in front of the city walls of Haarlem. Other women in the background. The woman is holding a spear with her right hand and a large sword hangs from her waist. According to the legend, Hasselaer played a crucial role in the liberation of the city of Haarlem from the Spanish siege in 1573. Titled and inscribed below: ‘KENAU SIMON HASSELAERS, een Zedighe doch moedighe Heldinne van… tegen de Spagniaerts opvoerde.’ The inscription on the bottom right corner, providing the page number ‘fol. 10’ has been scratched out from the plate. The portrait was included as plate in ‘Batavise Romeyn; ofte alle de voornaemste heldendaden, ridderlijke feyten en listige oorlogs-vonden, in veld en zeeslagen, overwinninge van steden en schepen, en in andere gelegentheden, by de Hollanders en Zeeuwen verricht, zedert den iare 1492 tot 1661’, a work by Petrus de Lange.
