Bust portrait of Kenau Simonsdochter Hasselaer wearing a dark suit with a collar with a pleated edge and a white hat with twisted briefs. On her right shoulder, she wears, on a piece of string, a medal with a rampant lion. At bottom right a gun handle and hilt of a sword are visible. According to the legend, Hasselaer played a crucial role in the liberation of the city of Haarlem from the Spanish siege in 1573. Titled below: ‘KENAU SIMONS HASSELAER, Bevelhebster over eene Bende Vrouwen in ‘t beleg van Haarlem. / H. Pothoven del. naar eene Schilderij by den K.r. Burg.r Hasselaer. / J Houbraken fec. // Is. TIRION excud 1760’. Included in “Portraiten van vermaarde persoonadien, dienende tot een aanhangsel op de Vaderlandsche historie.” published in Amsterdam by Isaak Tirion in 1761.
