Etienne (Stephan) Picart (1612-1721) after Carlo Maratta (1625-1713)

[Antique print, engraving] Immaculate Conception (Mary and Child), published ca. 1665.

The Virgin of the Immaculate Conception, standing on the globe, the crescent moon behind her, holding the Child who spears the serpent at her feet with his Cross, angels in the sky behind. The original painting by Carlo Maratta, dating 1663, stands on the main altar of the Roman church of St. Isidore. The marvellous frame decorated with roses was sculpted by Bernini. The print was probably sketched (and published?) in the period Étienne Picart was in Rome, 1655-1665.

Signed on bottom right: ‘Steph. Picart fecit et ex. Cum Pri. Regis’. Incomplete impression, lettering at the bottom removed. Still, beautiful impression, masterly engraved.

On bottom of the right corner, some pencil scribblings not affecting the plate.

Engraving on paper, trimmed within plate mark, total: 421 x 323 mm; some foxing on the most external margins; watermark with monogram of Christ; traces of previous mountings on verso.
