Portrait of Hendrik de Keyser (1565-1621), one of the most important Dutch sculptor of his day. Bust to right; in lettered oval within cartouche; four lines with Dutch verses by Vondel printed separately below impression.
Signed on the bottom left: ‘TDKeyser delineavit 1621′(TDK monogrammed), on he right: ‘I. Suyderhoff F.’ On the oval frame around the portrait:’HENDRICK DE KEYSER, BEELDT EN STEENHOUWER DES STADT AMSTERDAM’; on the cartouche below the portrait: ‘Gheboren 1565 dem 15 May / Ghestorven 1621 / den 15 May.’
Inscribed below with another plate: “Hier leeft, die, leven gaf aen marmer, aen metael / yvoor albast en klay dies laet zich, Uytrecht hooren / is Roome op Kaysers prat en keyserliche prael, / de kayser van de kunst uyt myn schoot ghebooren / I.V. Vondelen.”
