Portrait of the Antwerp painter Maerten de Vos, as 60 years old man. Two allegorical figures on the sides, Minerva and Rhetoric, are holding a laurel wreath above the portrait. Within the wreath an emblem with a bird on a fox, most likely a reference to the surname of the painter: Vos (fox). Within the wreath also Latin text: ‘PURO ASTU ET LABORE’. Inscribed in oval frame: ‘MARTINUS DE VOS BELGA ANTVERPIANUS PICTOR SOLERTISS AETATIS SUAE LX’, signed on the bottom: ‘Jos: Heinz Inuen: / Car. Collaert excud. / G: Sadler scalpt: ‘ In cartouche underneath: ‘AD M. VULPIUM IN EIUS IMAGINE / Hic Pictura tibi, hinc cedit Tritonia laurum / Illa manum VULPI, haec suspicit ingenium’.
