Portrait of David Vlugh, schout-by-nacht, with behind him a tapestry with a map of England. He wears a medallion carrying the motto of the Dutch Republic: ‘Concordia res parvae crescunt’. The inscription below states that he received this medal from the States General for his contribution to the Raid on the Medway in 1667.
On the stone slab: ‘David Vlugh, Schout […] het tweede Damiaet. / G. Brandt.’; ‘H. Bary sculp.’; ‘E. van den Hoof Excudit.’; below: ‘Op Schrift vande Medaille […] voor de Posteriteyt.’ On each side of the slab is a dolfin.
On verso is the collector’s mark of M. Fischel (L. 1863f), an admiral that used to collect portraits of Dutch admirals.
