Mariae (Gonzaga, Duchess of Mantua, Consort of Carlo II, Duke of Mantua, Daughter of Francesco IV, Duke of Mantua). An engraving of Maria Gonzaga, Duchess of Nevers. Maria was probably included in the series because she had once been intended to marry Gaston d’Orléans. In 1627 she married instead her cousin Charles II of Gongaza-Nevers.

Portrait of Maria Gonzaga, duchess of Nivers, then queen of Poland and Grand Duchess of Lithuania (1611-1667). Half-length, seated, bust turned to the left, head frontal, gazing at the viewer, holding a flower in her left hand a and a fan in the other. Pearls and jewels decorating her dress. Wearing a crown, mantle lined with ermine and powdered with fleur de lys. Decorative frame with circular elements containing flowers and mottos in Latin; cartouche at bottom inscribed: MARIAE PRINCIPI MANTUANAE DUVCISSAE NIVERNENSI &.

The print is undated, but is part of the series designed and published by Justus van Egmont. With privilege at bottom: Cum Privilegio Regis.

From the collection of Pierre Mariette II (1634-1716) On verso inscription (collector’s mark): P. Mariette 1696. [L. 1787, 1789, 1787]. Print dealer and publisher, the greatest publisher of the century; son of Pierre Mariette I.

[NL] Antieke portretprent uit ca 1643 door Jeremias Falck naar Justus van Egmont. Maria Ludovica van Mantua, ook Maria Ludovica van Gonzaga-Nevers was een dochter van Karel III van Nevers en van Catharina van Mayenne. Louise Marie koningin van Polen. Ten halven lijve, zittend, buste naar links gedraaid, hoofd frontaal, starend naar de toeschouwer, met in haar linkerhand een bloem en in de andere een waaier. Parels en juwelen versieren haar jurk. Mantel omzoomd met hermelijn en gepoederd met fleur de lys (lelie, lely’s). Decoratief frame met ronde elementen met daarin bloemen en motto’s in het Latijn.

De Poolse adel ergerde zich aan haar interesse in de politiek, maar zij bleef een belangrijke rol spelen, zoals bij het afweren van de Zweedse invasie (1655). Zij stichtte in 1652 de eerste Poolse krant, Merkuriusz Polski Ordynaryjny, en in 1654 stichtte zij het eerste klooster van de orde van maria Visitatie in Polen.
