Jakob Jonas Björnståhl (1731–1779),was a Swedish orientalist and an avid manuscript collector. He went on a Grand Tour in 1767, travelling to France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, The Netherlands (Holland) and England. He also visited Turkey, Syria, Palestine, Morocco and Greece. In the Netherlands, he was particularly interested in the so-called “konstkabinetten” (Wunderkammer, rariteitenkabinetten), collections of natural history, and particularly Dutch customs and morals.
Björnstähl wrote extensive letters about his experiences to his Swedish friend C.C. Gjörwell, the “Royal Book Custodian” in Stockholm, and a Dutch translation of his letters was first published between 1778 and 1784 in six parts titled “Björnstähls Reize door Europa en het Oosten”. His letters offer a vivid image both of the eighteenth-century traveler and of the various countries he explores.
