Portrait of Charlotte de Bourbon (1547-1582), third wife of William of Orange, standing beside a table. Half-length, in an oval frame surrounded by allegorical representations. In each corner are female personifications of the four elements with biblical scenes in the background. The highly decorated strapwork hides animals and symbols related to the elements. Inscribed on the oval frame: CAROLA BVRBONIA. D.G. PRIN. AVR. CO: NASS. &C. AET. ANN. XXIII. A’. M.LXXXI; inscribed in the circular frame encompassing her coat of arms, above: VNA SOLA AVRORA HA DE VENCER MI NOCHE; on the cartouche below: ‘Huius me curae…. lustrabit lampade Solis.’
Engraving on paper, trimmed within plate mark, mounted on cardboard mat; total: 268 x 184 mm; state I/2; mounted on cardboard mat with passepartout; some creases and dirt; light discoloration in the region of the face and some abrasion on the paper within the oval frame, possibly to clean the impression from the impurities of the plate. On the bottom right, a crease affects the bottom right allegory of fire, though this imperfection is due to the printing process when the paper got pinched under the press.
