Michael Maier (Rendsburg in Holstein 1568-1622 Magdeburg) was physician, alchemist, and Rosicrucian. This circumstance, together with the books he wrote, his sojourn at the court of Rudolf II of Prague, and the people with whom he came in contact in England define the circle within which the meaning of the emblems in his Atalanta Fugiens must be sought. This book, published in 1617 and 1618 at Oppenheim, forms a link between alchemists and Rosicrucians.
