Brochure on Frederik van Eeden’s (1860-1932) self-sufficient colony named Walden (1898-1907). Van Eeden founded the colony (or commune) on the Cruysbergen estate in Bussum, near neighborhood Het Spiegel. Walden was to be a peaceful community where the socialist ideal was pursued and doubled as a resting place for psychiatric patients. Van Eeden travelled the country to promote his utopian philosophy, but also faced criticism: author Herman Heijermans described Van Eeden as “…een ongevaarlijke charlatan, een armzalig keuteltje. Wie hem ernstig neemt stelt het arbeidende volk gelijk met hysterische Bussumse juffrouwen.”
Not long before the publication of this brochure, Walden went bankrupt; however, Van Eeden continued to live there.
