Two volumes, Literature, [after 1826], Vosmaer | Nagelaten en verspreide Letter-Arbeid van Jacob Vosmaer, ‘s Gravenhage, K. Fuhri, [after 1826], two volumes.
Second edition of a collection of prose pieces by Jacob Vosmaer (1783-1824). On title page of volume 1: stamp of I. H. de Haas.
This collection of prose pieces by the recently deceased physician was first published two years after his death, with as its undisputed literary highlight ‘Het leven en de wandelingen van Meester Maarten Vroeg’, a series of sketches about a village surgeon-barber which had appeared in the Vaderlandsche Letteroefeningen from 1821 to 1823. Elizabeth Jongejan calls Vosmaer a purebred humorist: his Meester Vroeg is with us perhaps the most perfect representative of the witty-moralizing type. ‘Het leven en de wandelingen van Meester Maarten Vroeg’ has been reprinted regularly, both in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In 2005, Jean Koene posthumously published an edition containing both Vosmaer’s original text and a retranslated version, preceded by an extensive introduction.
