Portrait of Hans Holbein, half-length, slightly turned to the left, dressed in a patterned gown over his doublet and shirt with a wide-brimmed soft hat on his head, pillars on either side supporting an arch with flowers above, his arms below; inscribed below: “Johannes Holbein I: F: Pictor Celeber Civis Basiliensis immortale Patriae Britanniaeque Decus” “Natus Anno Domini 1498.” “Denatus Londini Anno 1554.” and the group portrait of Elsbeth Holbein and her children, Philipp and Katharina, behind a lettered parapet; after Hans Holbein the Younger. Lettered on parapet with the title followed by “Ad Tabulam Joh: Holbenii in Biblioth: publ: Basil: adservatam” and below image with further details: “Joh: Holbein pinx.t”, “Basileae apud Chr: a Mechel Chalcogr.” and “B. Hübner sculp: 1790”.
Engraving on paper with margins; plate mark: 320 x 258 mm, total: 383 x 270 mm; some light foxing on Holbein’s portrait; traces of previous mounting on verso of both prints, otherwise in good condition.
