Het boek heeft 4 hoofdthema’s: Benedictijnse Regel, Spiritualiteit en Discipline, Structuur van het Kloosterleven, Morele en Ethische overwegingen. Het werk werd geschreven in een tijd waarin de katholieke kerk en vooral het kloosterleven geconfronteerd werd met interne hervormingen en tegenstrijdigheden door de protestante reformatie.
