The stranded whale at the shore of Zandvoort, 21st November 1584

The dead whale is resting on the shore while two men are measuring it. The animal has opened mouth showing its tongue. From the background a long line of curious people is coming to see the giant. Four lines of Latin text below:’Ceruleus profert immania corpora pentus… Quod tibi spectandum scita dat Goltzius arte. / C. Schneus’; signed within picture:’HGolzius exc.'(HG monogrammed).

Engraving on paper; trimmed on platemark; total: 172 x 253 mm; very fine contemporary impression on paper with watermark in the shape of a crowned coat of arms; paper evenly yellowed with some small stains, repaired on the lower left margin on the text. Only state. Rare. Hollstein 571. PH3N
