Satirical print with a portrait of the English Admiral Henry Appleton, commander of the English fleet defeated during the sea battle at Livorno by a Dutch fleet under the command of Jan van Galen, on 14th March 1653. The Admiral stands ashore, pointing with his left hand towards the viewer. In the background the sea battle with the name of Jan van Galen. The print is part of a set of ten plates with representations of beggars and peasants in which also several figures from the First English War (Eerste Engelse Oorlog) are included, ca. 1653-1654. Monogrammed ad numbered on the bottom left with nr. “10”. On verso some transfer-ink.
Etching on paper; with some margins; platemark: 136 x 91; total: 151 x 108; some staining, also affecting the sky; damp stain towards the bottom, toning paper.
