Information from 1396 up to 1621, being the year that the twelve-year’truce in the Eighty Year’s War was expired, also called Pax Hispannica. Including reports on the events between 1518-1555 and the accession of King Philip II of Spain in 1556, after which he oppressed the Protestants and those opposing the Spanish rule in the Netherlands. The book had a purpose: terrifying people on Spain’s offenses, fearing them and so avoiding anti-Spanish feelings. The Spanish were brutal and tortured and killed many people, raped many women eand hurt childrens as well. It also deals with many sieges and battles in the 80 year old war. With three portraits of Fernando, Grand Duke of Alba (1507-1582), Luis de Requesens (1528-1576) and Willem de Zwijger (William the Silent), Prince of Orange (1533-1584). The frontispiece shows people hanging on the gallows. It is clear that nothing good could be expected from the Spanish domination.
