François-Marie Arouet (1694–1778) was a French Enlightenment writer, historian, and philosopher. An extremely versatile writer, Voltaire produced works in almost every literary form. He wrote more than 20,000 letters and 2,000 books and pamphlets. He was an advocate of separation of church and state and spoke out against the Catholic Church. Voltaire also voiced his criticisms regarding slavery and anti-Judaism, and supported the toleration of all religions and ethnicities.
