Published in occassion of the first Mahler festival in Amsterdam. As a tribute to the composer, Willem Mengelberg (1871-1951) organized the Mahler Festival on his 25th anniversary of conducting for the Amsterdam Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
Willem Mengelberg was the second principal conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra. He succeeded Willem Kes in 1895. For fifty years he led the orchestra and was of great significance for the development of Dutch musical life. He forged close ties with such prominent composers as Richard Strauss, Gustav Mahler, Claude Debussy and Igor Stravinsky, all of whom stood before the orchestra more than once. Thanks to Mengelberg, the Concertgebouw Orchestra became one of the absolute best in the world.
Mengelberg was an important musician, but had major flaws as a human being – during World War II he sided with the German occupiers too often. After World War II, Mengelberg was fired and banned from conducting for life.
