School Book, [s.a.], ABC Book | Trap der Jeugt, ofte De perfecte Maniere om de Jeugt wel te leeren lesen. [s.l.], [s.n.], [s.a.], 62 pp. Incomplete.
An incomplete edition of a children’s school book. 10th and 11th step missing, as well as the title page and (possibly?) preface.
De Trap der Jeugt, written by the Leeuwarden teacher Carel de Gelliers in 160, was the sequel to the ABC book or the very first reading textbook in the Netherlands. On the basis of the ABC book, children learned to read and write. De Trap der Jeugt is compiled of twelve “steps”, increasing in difficulty as the reader progresses. Examples of text and reading examples are not provided until the seventh stage and consist of prayers, the articles of faith, the ten commandments and the like. After teaching writing (the ninth step) and arithmetic (the tenth step), the eleventh step contains several instructive rhymes and poems.
As often, this booklet is printed in different typefaces: roman, gothic, italic and civilité, for the students to get acquainted with in practice.
