Guicciardini, Lodovico (1521-1589)
Hand coloured copperplate engraving of the Dutch city of Rotterdam, as seen from above. With explanatory title above the city and a blank cartouche on the top left of the plate. The city crest of Rotterdam is depicted in the top middle. ca. 1582. Based on a print by Jacob van Deventer (1501/2-1575). Overall size: 29,5 x 37 cm; plate size: 25,4 x 34,3 cm. Fair/good state. Some age related discolouration. Pasted to a piece of contemporary paper. Roughly coloured. Handlaid paper with a fold in the middle (tear in the original fold).
This print originates from ‘Lodovico Guicciardini, Descrittione di tutti i Paesi bassi (…), Antwerpen, Plantijn, 1582’. This was an influential account of the history and the arts of the Low Countries, accompanied by city maps by various leading engravers. Deys 2001.
