This rare volume (the first edition is very scarce) chronicles the personal journed of German author and journalist Ludolf Wienbarg through Holland during a pivotal period in European history, offering insides in the cultural landscape and political climate of early 19th century Netherlands. Provenance: Carl Viol Amsterdam. With stamp of University van Amsterdam and the text: Door Viol geschonken. Ex libris of Carl Viol Amsterdam signed by E. van Doesburgh. Very decorative ex libris with the Munttoren Amsterdam seen from the canal. Amsterdam canal scene. Elsa Woutersen-van Doesburgh (1907-1981) made this ex libris ca 1930. Another book from the collection of Carl Viol is also in our stock with number 52418, titled “Pestels Nachricht von Holland” 1784.
[NL] Carl Viol kwam in 1893 uit Duitsland naar Nederland en was lid van de firma Meyer & Co te Amsterdam. Hij maakte een diepe studie van de antieke oudheid. Zijn beroemde verzameling Duitse literatuur is vermaakt aan de Gemeente Amsterdam voor de Universiteitsbibliotheek. Hij overleed in 1950.
