A story for children by Titia van der Tuuk, with colored plates. Inscription on front board, in ink: “H. v. d. Horst”.
In 1875, Titia became acquainted with the ideas of Multatuli, and began corresponding with the author. She developed into a convinced atheist and freethinker. From 1885 she earned her living as a translator and writer of children’s books, historical novels, feminist novels and works on sexuality and sexual morality.
Van der Tuuk was also an active member of Freethought society “De Dageraad”. She was concerned with numerous social issues, such as total abstinence, the social question, education, vegetarianism, antimilitarism, hygiene and the position of women. She joined associations, held lectures and published numerous writings on these subjects.
As a feminist, sexual morality and women’s suffrage were especially close to her heart. She considered marriage between a man and a woman on the basis of equality impossible within the existing relationship between the two sexes. From 1896, she lived together with her friend Rose Roosegaarde Bisschop.
Van der Tuuk began publishing stories for children in 1878. Her first children’s book was published in 1882.
