A very rare copy of a children’s story about Jewish conversion, written by H.M. Wateler (1808-1879) in 1872. Wateler was a board member
of the Dutch Society for Israel and wrote at least two other children’s stories of the same theme, titled “Rachel, de kleine Groenteverkoopster” (1871) and “De loterij-jood” (1872).

Two editions were published of “Levi, de kleine Luciferskoopman”. In his 2017 dissertation “Levi’s eerste kerstfeest. Jeugdverhalen over jodenbekering 1792-2015”, Ewout Sanders stated that there are no known surviving printings of this work, meaning that this specific copy is the first and only available.

Youth stories about Jewish conversion are not a marginal phenomenon:
some stories were distributed in huge print runs. They appeared in book form, in newspapers and magazines, school books, as Christmas gifts or as theatrical plays.
