Rare miniature Almanac 1783 | Almanach op ‘t jaar ons heeren jesu christi 1783, Amsterdam erfgen weduwe Corn. Stichter 1783. With silver clasps and a large closing pin (sluitpen).
Original miniature almanac, 80 x 52 mm from the year 1783 printed in Amsterdam by weduwe Stichter. Titlepage in red and black ink. Full black leather (Sharkskin, segrijn, haaienleer) binding with ornamental four silver clasps and a silver pin. With special waxcoated page (geprepareerd papier) to write and delete the writings. This technique was used in the 16th and 17th century for notebooks and sketch-books. Silver pencil also functioning as a catch. Two clasps show the ‘keurmerk’ of the city The Hague (stadskeur Den Haag = Stork, Ooievaar) and the year letter I for the year 1780. No visible silver marks on the pencil.
In essence, an almanac served as a calender showing the most important saint’s days, lunar phases and market days throughout the country. Tides and eclipses were also listed. In this almanac we find a calender in red and black ink. Empty pages for notes, some with scribbles, Reys-wyzer, wanneer de veerschapen en trekschuyten moeten afvaren, ook het luyden van der Poortklokken van Amsterdam, Haarlem, Enkhuijsen, Gouda en Leyden, gedrukt voor de Reysende, De oprechte Italiaanse waarzegger op ‘t jaar ons Heeren jesu Christi 1783, Korte Kronyk beginnende van den jare 1711, last and first 2 pages are marbled decorated paper which is normally used as a binding.
On the titlepage a nice woodcut of a lamplighter in the church.
