First Latin edition of Clopton Havers’ landmark Osteologia Nova, one of the foundational works in the history of osteology and early modern anatomy. Published in 1692, it introduced Havers’ pioneering observations on the structure, growth and nourishment of bone, including the anatomical features that later became known as the Haversian canals, and helped establish him as one of the leading anatomists of the seventeenth century.

18th century full calf leather binding with some minor wear, except for the hinges in the front which misses a part of the leather. Firm binding. Interior in very good condition. Octavo edition, in -8, 17 x 10 cm. Collation: *8 A-Z8 2A8 (last page blank). Complete text but lacks the two folding plates.

[NL] De eerste Latijnse uitgave van Havers’ beroemde Osteologia Nova, oorspronkelijk in 1691 in het Engels gepubliceerd. Het werk maakte Havers internationaal bekend en behoort tot de klassiekers van de anatomie. Havers beschrijft onder meer de microscopische structuur van bot, het periost, beenmerg, kraakbeen, voeding en groei van bot en gewrichtsslijm en gewrichtsaandoeningen.

Hoewel Antoni van Leeuwenhoek en anderen vergelijkbare observaties deden, werd Havers vooral beroemd doordat de naar hem genoemde Haversian canals (canales Haversiani) uiteindelijk naar hem zijn vernoemd. Zijn onderzoek vormde een mijlpaal in de ontwikkeling van de osteologie.
