Rare antique math book by the famous Euclides. Missing titlepage but alike the layout of the Christoph Clavius edition (only books 1-9 in googlebooks). This is a heavily commented edition of Euclid’s Element. This edition with the books 10-16 has manuscript annotations and handwritten former ownership inscriptions. Missing the titlepage. Book X starts at p. 2 and the book ends with book 16 on page 294. Missing pages 193, 213, 234, 273 and after 293.
Full vellum binding in poor condition, flexible vellum. Interior much used so with many frayes and sometimes loss of paper. Some pages with severe browning. Octavo edition, in -8, 18 x 12,5 cm. Collation: A1 missing. Missing AA7+8 and BB1, so missing the page with number 193. Missing the page with number 213, 234, 273. A-Z8+2A-O8 (if Complete)
Provenance: Manuscript annotations and inscription of a name: Balibinus Boncauron (?), most likely 17th century handwriting. In the back of the cover the name Busgnellet (?) and more yet unidentied text.
[NL] Boeken 10-16 van Euclides Elementen. Lijkt de Christophorus Clavius (1538-1612) editie te zijn maar door de missende titelpagina moeilijk te controleren. Clavius herschreef de tekst niet alleen, maar voorzag vrijwel iedere definitie, stelling en constructie van uitgebreide verklaringen, historische opmerkingen en didactische toelichtingen. Zijn editie vormde gedurende meer dan een eeuw het standaardleerboek voor de jezuïetencolleges in Europa en speelde een belangrijke rol in de opleiding van astronomen, ingenieurs, architecten en landmeters. De uitgave bevat tevens de later aan de Elementen toegevoegde boeken XIV–XVI, waaronder het zestiende boek van François de Foix-Candale. De vele houtgesneden geometrische diagrammen zijn integraal onderdeel van de tekst en illustreren de bewijzen.
