Book about the famous Gardens in Stowe, Buckinghamshire. Designed by Richard Temple, 1st Viscount Cobham (1669?-1749). The gardens are part of Stowe House, the house of Lord Cobham. Only the 11 plates of which 1 folding.
Book with wooden rope sewn together with at the front etching of the following text: To the right honourable the Lord Viscount Cobham – These views of Temples and other Ornamental buildings in the gardens at Stow, are humbly dedicated by his Lordship’s obliged & most obedt servant B. Seeley. Thereafter 11 pages with etchings with the views of monuments, temples and garden buildings, one being a folded elevation of the house, North and South view. Each of the 11 plates are lettered with a title, production details “B. Seeley delin” and publication line “Publish’d according to the Act of Parliament May 1. 1750”.
Edges of the pages a bit frayed, folding plate with some paper loss in the left top corner.
The British museum has a copy with these illustrations in it: “Stow: a Description of the Magnificent Gardens of the right honourable Richard Earl Temple Viscount and Baron Cobham” (London: J. Rivington / Buckingham: B. Seeley) 1756, a guide-book of the country house and gardens for visitors, including: a folded plan of the house and gardens; a title-page; a list of plates; a dedication to the Viscount Cobham; 11 plates showing views of the monuments, temples and other garden buildings, one being a folded elevation of the house, North and South view; with a head-piece and an initial letter at the start of the text. Bound in leather with a gilt-tooled border. In this guide book of the British museum several illustrations by J.S. Miller sc.”, “G. Vertue sculp / G. Vandergucht sculp.”, “B. Seeley delin”, also all with publication line: Publish’d according to the Act of Parliament May 1. 1750.
In this book only mention of B. Seeley delin. This publication seems to be an exceptional separate publication of only the 11 plates. The work of Benton Seeley was first published in 1744. This seems to be an individual standing summary copy of the Gardens of Stow, views description & a dialogue of 1751.
