The Department of Drawing of the society Felix Meritis (founded 1777) was an institution in Amsterdam for artists and dilettantes to create and reflect on art in each other’s company. There has not been any other known community ensemble of arts and sciences in the history of Netherlands, which makes Felix Meritis an interesting subject for further research. The annales of the Department of Drawing are an important source of information regarding eighteenth- and nineteenth-century artists, their practice and perceptions/beliefs.
