Printed document containing the sentence of Gilles van Ledenberch (ca. 1550 – 1618). Van Ledenberch was a close ally of Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, and it was his consistent support in the ongoing conflict with Prince Maurice that contributed to his arrest in August of 1618. Along with several other “conspirators”, he was accused of treason and trading with Spain. Ledenberch’s greatly feared the forfeiture of his assets following his conviction (as well as the torture he was threatened with), so much so that he committed suicide with a bread knife in an attempt to prevent it. His death, however, did not prevent his trial from taking place. On May 12th 1619, Gilles van Ledenberch was posthumously sentenced to death and “executed” by hanging his embalmed body (in its coffin!) from a gibbet, where it was left hanging for 21 days.
