View of Haarlem from the North, overlooking the Spaarne where boats and sails are floating. On the left, on the bank of the canal are three gentlemen, one seated, sketching the outline of the city in the distance, and the other two standing, one pointing a finger towards the city. Signed on the bottom left corner: ‘P. Zaenredam Jnvent. / J.V.Velde sculp.’ ; twelve lines of Dutch text below: ‘Siet hier een oude Stad… houd mijne pen.’; flying over the city scape a cartouche with inscription: ‘HARLEMUM. / Civitas Hollandia… omnium prima’. On each side of the cartouche, the arms of the city. This plate with other eleven was meant to decorate Samuel Ampzing’s “Beschryvinge ende Lof der Stad Haerlem in Holland…” published in 1628 in Haarlem.
