Bust portrait of Jan Trip (1664-1732) in an oval within architectural frame inhabited by allegorical figures. Signed and addressed at the bottom, in the middle: ‘J. Lindenberg Inven: et Excudit.’ Dated on the right, under the winged figure ‘1715.’ Inscription on the oval frame: ‘IOH: TRIP BERKENRODAE TOPARCHA: CONS: ET SENAT: AMST: NAT. 1664.’ On verso title in letterpress. The plate was in fact used to decorate the 1721 two volumes edition of “Bybels en groot Waerelds Tafereel, met notable vermeerdingen verrykt door M. Gargon”. Between the two bottom allegorical figures is a nice view of Amsterdam from the Ij.

Etching and engraving on paper with some margins; plate mark: 305 x 203 mm, total: 328 x 226 mm; despite very light stain on the right margin, in great condition. Muller 5410a.

Jan Trip, sinds 1724 heer van Berkenrode, was lid van de Amsterdamse patriciërsfamilie Trip, bewindhebber van de Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie en burgemeester van Amsterdam. In 1728 werd hij curator van de Leidse Hogeschool.
