Bust portrait of Charles II; slightly directed to the left, head turned to the right; wearing long wig, armour, sash, and lace collar; in oval frame with ivy, seton interior sill, with curtain behind; Inscription below: “CHARLES II / Roy de la Grande Bretagne”, signed “Vander Werff pinxit / Petr. Drevet sculpsit” illustration to Larrey’s “Histoire d’Angleterre” (1707).

Karel II was koning van Engeland, Schotland en Ierland van 1660 tot 1685. Hij was de tweede zoon van koning Karel I en koningin Henriëtta Maria, een zuster van koning Lodewijk XIII van Frankrijk.

Etching and engraving on paper, with wide margins; plate mark: 312 x 186 mm, total: 422 x 258 mm; despite some very small, almost undetectable stains and foxing, in very good condition.
